The word ‘rickshaw’ originates from the Japanese word jinrikisha (jin = human, riki = strength, sha = vehicle) which literally means ‘human-powered vehicle’. Upon their initial introduction in the mid 1800’s, rickshaws were mainly used as a means of transportation for the social elite. Today, rickshaws are still in use in parts of Southeast Asia.
